The Art of Preserving History: Stained Glass in Casement Bay Windows

This client in London wished to preserve their beautiful stained glass panels in their casement bay windows. Let's have a closer look at the process.

Removal of Old Windows

Taking It All Apart

In order to transfer the stained glass panels to the new casements, they had to be cut out carefully by our team. The video below shows how our Managing Director Dalius did this by hand, cutting through the frame and pulling out each original stained glass piece.

These pieces were then sent off to Specialist Glass Co. https://www.specialistglass-london.co.uk/ who upgraded them to individual, double-glazed segments. Here is an extract from their website explaining this:

"We take your original stained glass panels out and resize, restore and fit them back into your new windows. Using Y section lead the stained glass sits between both clear panes of glass, achieving all the benefits of warmth and sound proofing leaving your original feature windows back where they belong."

The Result

After we had received the stained glass units (now double-glazed) back from Specialist Glass Co., we fitted them by hand and installed all the windows. The client chose to go for dual colour windows, with RAL 9004 (signal black) for the exterior and RAL 9016 (traffic white) for the interior, which looks remarkable from up close!

"I could not recommend Dalius and his team at Woody Man enough. From start to finish they were highly professional and programme driven. The end product was impressive and we could not be happier with the quality. We would highly recommend Woody man and would be happy to provide any further reference." ~Daniel Horton
