Bringing back an Original Stained Glass Design on a Historical Street

Writer: Emma EismontaiteEmma Eismontaite

A recent project in South-East London comprised of installing stained glass into our clients' new bow casement windows. The important thing to note here, is that most of the houses on this street had the same stained glass design, most likely because the neighbourhood was built around the same time period by the same builders. It reflects a particular architectural style popular at the time, and the client wished to go back to this.

Bow windows and bay windows are easily confused; bay windows are usually more widely known and they are box-shaped with 3 facets (similar to the top left window in the above photo). Bow windows, such as this one, have 4 or more facets. Seeing as bow windows protrude outwards more, they require reinforcement during the installation process, as seen below.

The stained glass was produced by the wonderful Specialist Glass Co. https://www.specialistglass-london.co.uk/, who constructed the design like-for-like to the rest of the street. Look below for a before & after comparison.

The total installation time took just over a week for all windows, and these are a few examples of the final result from both inside and outside. A bit of colour truly makes a difference to the front of a house!
