Types of Safety Glass

We manufacture all our external doors with double glazed, safety glass (triple glazing can be requested), toughened/tempered from one side and laminated from the other. What's the difference between the two?

Toughened/Tempered Glass

Toughened glass is significantly stronger than ordinary glass and undergoes a special heating and rapid cooling process that creates a compressive layer of stress on the surface. In the event of breakage, it shatters into small, blunt pieces, reducing injury risk.

Laminated Glass

Laminated glass consists of two or more layers of glass with a plastic interlayer, often made of polyvinyl butyral (PVB). This type of glazing is renowned for its safety features and sound insulation properties, although heavier than tempered glass. When broken, the glass stays intact with the plastic.

With the combination of both types of glass, our doors have maximum security, sound insulation and privacy levels.

Types of Privacy Glass

Clear Glass

Clear glass is usually requested for our porch and patio doors.

Obscured/Frosted Glass

Obscured or frosted glass provides privacy while still allowing natural light into a space. It is created by sandblasting or applying an acid solution to clear glass, and is one of the more opaque options for our front doors.

Reeded Glass

Reeded glass is a vertical, ribbed design that provides privacy by scattering light coming through. It provides a unique texture to your door, and offers a smaller opacity than obscured glass.

Obscured Glass with a Transparent Line

This is a more classy option than just obscured glass on its own, and is also more expensive than the other glass types.

Fanlights

Fanlights are most popularly clear glass with a sunblasted house number for maximum sunlight, but we also provide obscured glass with a clear house number, as well as reeded, or even just clear (examples below).
